Martin McCain is a member of the trombone faculty at Texas State University. In addition to the trombone area, he also teaches courses in jazz studies and directs the Jazz Lab Band. Dr. McCain, a fourth-generation musician, maintains a versatile schedule as a performer in the classical and jazz genres. As an active performer, McCain performs regularly with the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra, Monster Big Band, and Contemporary Works Jazz Orchestra (TX). He has also performed with the Austin Symphony Orchestra, Austin Lyric Opera, Victoria Symphony Orchestra, Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra, San Antonio Opera (TX), Meridian Symphony Orchestra (MS), Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and many commercial jazz bands throughout the southern region. As a soloist, McCain has appeared as a guest soloist with several ensembles and performs recital tours throughout the country. McCain is a founding member of the highly acclaimed, award-winning jazz trombone ensemble, JazzBonez. The ensemble was named winner of both the 2007 National and International Jazz Trombone Ensemble Competitions. JazzBonez has been featured at several major conferences including the International Trombone Festival and the Eastern Trombone Workshop. Dr. McCain is also a founding member of the Minor 4th Trombone Quartet along with three other prominent university trombone professors of Texas.

In 2008, McCain joined the staff of the International Trombone Association, serving as the Events Coordinator for the ITA website. As an active member of the International Trombone Association, Dr. McCain writes CD reviews for the “Audio Visual” column of the quarterly Journal of the ITA. McCain has taught in the Austin, Round Rock, and Eanes Independent School Districts and is in demand as a clinician. His students have also been winners and finalists of several competitions and have been invited to perform at national, state and regional conferences. As an educator in the state of Texas, Dr. McCain was selected to choose the All-State bass trombone repertoire for the entire state of Texas and presented a performance clinic at the Texas Bandmaster’s Association Convention in San Antonio. In 2010, McCain and his students were invited to perform at the Big 12 Trombone Conference in Lubbock, TX. McCain also served as an adjudicator for the Yamaha Xeno Tenor Trombone Solo Competition and the Edwards Bass Trombone Solo Competition. In 2010, McCain was invited to perform at the International Trombone Festival with the four ensembles including the William Cramer Trombone Choir, an ensemble comprised of outstanding performers who currently hold professorships at American universities.

Dr. McCain holds degrees from The University of Texas at Austin (D.M.A. and M.M.) and The University of Southern Mississippi (B.M.). His primary teachers are Nathaniel Brickens, Marta Hofacre, and Greg Luscombe. He has also received instruction from Charles Villarubia, Stefan Sanders, Doug Yeo, Randy Hawes, and Charles Vernon. He can be heard as bass trombonist on the Willie Nelson movie, Fighting With Anger and upcoming JazzBonez album.
