
Martin McCain, a fourth-generation musician, maintains an active schedule on trombone, sackbut and tuba as a free-lance player in the classical and jazz genres. As an educator, McCain is on the faculty at Huston-Tillotson University in Austin, TX where he serves as the Low Brass Instructor and Director of Instrumental Activities. As a performer, he placed runner-up in the 2002 International Trombone Association’s Donald Yaxley Solo Bass Trombone Competition and the Kai Winding Jazz Trombone Ensemble Competition. In 2003, McCain was a semi-finalist for the Eastern Trombone Workshop’s National Bass Trombone Solo Competition. Martin was also a member of HubBones, a jazz trombone sextet, who won the 2002 National Jazz Trombone Ensemble Competition.
Martin is the bass trombonist of the Laredo Philharmonic Orchestra, Monster Big Band, and Contemporary Works Jazz Orchestra. He has also performed with the Austin Symphony Orchestra, Victoria Symphony Orchestra, Brazos Valley Symphony Orchestra, San Antonio Opera, Meridian Symphony Orchestra, Mississippi Symphony Orchestra and many commercial jazz bands throughout the southern region. Martin is also active as a chamber musician. He is a founding member of the renowned JazzBonez, winner of both the 2007 National and International Jazz Trombone Ensemble Competitions. Since then, JazzBonez has performed at several major conferences including the 2008 Texas Music Educators Associations Convention held in San Antonio, TX, the 2007 International Trombone Festival held Las Vegas, NV and the 2007 Eastern Trombone Workshop in Fort Myer, VA.
McCain holds degrees from The University of Texas at Austin (D.M.A and M.M.) and The University of Southern Mississippi (B.M.). His principle teachers are Nathaniel Brickens, Marta Hofacre, and Greg Luscombe. Martin has also received instruction from Stephan Sanders, Randy Hawes, and Charles Vernon. He can be heard as bass trombonist on a recent recording with the University of Texas at Austin Wind Ensemble called “Circus Maximus” and the soon-to-be-released Willie Nelson movie, Fighting With Anger. Martin McCain is an active member of the International Trombone Association, International Tuba Euphonium Association, College Music Society, Music Educator’s National Conference, International Association of Jazz Education (Texas Chapter), Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity of America.
